The City of Elko is recruiting for current and future openings of entry level and/or experienced Police Officers.  This position is responsible for performing general duty law enforcement work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. 

 This position requires:  1) a High School Diploma (or G.E.D.); 2) a current valid driver’s license; 3) the physical strength and agility to perform the essential functions of the position; and 4) a background clear of felony convictions in this state or any offense which would be a felony if committed in this state, or any offense involving moral turpitude or unlawful use, sale or possession of a controlled substance, or documented history of physical, or domestic violence.  Applicants must have U.S. citizenship and be twenty-one (21) years of age.  Successful candidates must be able to perform shift work and be able to obtain a Basic Peace Officers Standard Training Certificate (P.O.S.T.).  

 The selection process will consist of a physical agility exam (pass/fail), written examination, and panel interview.  Prior to appointment, successful candidates will be required to undergo comprehensive law enforcement background checks, voice stress analyzer tests, as well as post-offer medical/psychological examinations. 

 The current entry level salary is $4,416.10 per month, plus an excellent benefits package.  The current salary range for lateral transfers is $4,600.32 - $5,772.40 per month, plus an excellent benefits package.  Salary will be based on experience.

 Open/Competitive

Reporting to the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and/or Shift Captain, this position is responsible for fighting fires, responding to emergency medical/rescue situations, and participating in fire prevention activities.  Duties will include, but will not be limited to:  protecting life and property; operating and maintaining firefighting/rescue equipment; maintaining fire stations; providing EMS services, and performing related tasks as required. 

 This position requires: 1) a High School Diploma (or G.E.D.); 2) a current and valid driver’s license, with the ability to obtain a State of Nevada driver’s license within 30 days of hire; 3) a minimum age requirement of 18 years old; 4) current and valid National Registry or State of Nevada EMT certification 5) ability to obtain State of Nevada AEMT certification within one year of hire date; and 6) the physical strength and agility to perform the essential functions of the position. 

 The selection process will consist of:  1) employment application screening; 2) physical agility examination (pass/fail); 3) written examination; 4) oral examination/panel interview; and 5) Chief’s interview.  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for this position will be invited to the physical agility examination.  Applicants who pass the physical agility examination will advance to the written examination.  Prior to appointment, the successful applicant must pass a post-offer medical examination and qualify for a Federal Aviation Administration/Transportation Security Administration Security Badge (comprehensive background check required).  The applicant is required to maintain physical conditioning and suitability throughout his/her career.

 Initial salary will be at the entry level of $4,381 per month, plus an excellent benefits package.

PHYSICAL FITNESS STANDARDS

 Candidates applying for the Firefighter position with the City of Elko Fire Department must successfully pass the physical agility examination in order to continue on to additional portions of the testing process. 

 To pass the physical examination, a candidate must pass the following physical ability tests:

  • Complete a vertical jump of not less than 14 inches
  • Complete not less than 30 sit-ups in 1 minutes
  • Complete not less than 23 push-ups – no time limit
  • Run 300 meters in not more than 68 seconds
  • Walk or run 1.5 miles in not more than 16 minutes and 57 seconds
  • Complete an agility run in not more than 19.5 seconds

There is no exception to the requirement that the physical examination must be passed.  It is recommended that interested candidates begin physical fitness preparation and conditioning before participating in the physical fitness examination.

PARKS MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I

Reporting to the Parks & Recreation Superintendent, this full-time position is responsible for general maintenance of the parks, all buildings located in the parks, and all maintenance equipment.  Duties will include, but will not be limited to:  Operating power-mowers, push mowers, tractors, light trucks, skip loaders and other power equipment used in maintenance and development of a park facility.  This position will assist in the propagation of turf and plants from seed and cuttings; dig trenches and lay pipe, repair lines, haul dirt and gravel, rake and pick up litter; keep all restrooms neat and clean; paint, stain, assist in construction of buildings, signs, benches and equipment.  This position performs general maintenance on equipment, greasing, washing, and sharpening of mower blades; operates spray equipment in controlling plant pests and diseases; and plants and irrigates new turf areas and landscape areas.

This position requires any combination of experience and training, which demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform this type of work.  Applicants must have sufficient formal education to be able to read and write in the English language and have the ability to follow instructions and do simple mathematical calculations.  A current valid driver’s license is also required. 

The hourly pay rate for this position is $16.13 - $18.22, plus an excellent benefits package.
