FIREFIGHTER

Reporting to the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and/or Shift Captain, these positions are responsible for fighting fires, responding to emergency medical/rescue situations, and participating in fire prevention activities. Duties will include, but will not be limited to: protecting life and property; operating and maintaining firefighting/rescue equipment; maintaining fire stations; providing EMT-I services, and performing related tasks as required.
ENTRY LEVEL CANDIDATES: This position requires: I.) A High School Diploma (or G.E.D.); II.) A valid State of Nevada Driver’s License (or the ability to obtain upon date of employment); and III.) The physical strength and agility to perform the essential functions of the position. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for this position will be invited to the written examination. The selection process will consist of: 1) Employment application screening; 2) Written examination; Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for this position will be invited to the written examination. (An exam fee of $11.00 will be assessed to all applicants taking the written exam.); 3) Physical agility examination (pass/fail); 4) Oral interview; and 5) Chief’s Interview.
LATERAL CANDIDATES: This position requires: I.) A minimum of two years continuous service within the past three (3) years with a Nevada Fire Department on a full time or paid call status, one interruption of service within the past three year time frame of less than thirty (30) days is permissible. II.) Possess a valid Nevada State Fire Marshals Fire Fighter I Certification or valid certification from another state, meeting Fire Fighter I qualifications as described in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001. III.) Must possess a minimum of a current Nevada State Emergency Medical Technicians Certification (EMT-B) or equivalent certification from another state, meeting Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements. IV.) Must meet City’s medical standards and pass annual physical exam with a medical provider selected by the City and meet annual department standards within required time-frame. V.) Must be able to work any shift or days of the week and work in a potentially dangerous environment and manage stressful and potentially dangerous/difficult contact situations. VI.) Possess a valid Nevada driver’s license with maintenance of satisfactory driving record at time of application. The selection process will consist of: 1.) An application review (screening for minimum qualifications); 2.) Satisfactory completion of the Physical Agility Test; 3.) An oral interview; and 4.) A Chief’s Interview.
Only the top ten (10) scoring applicants (plus ties) from each group, i.e. entry level or lateral candidates will advance to the oral interview. Entry level candidates shall have the written examination and oral interview scores weighted equally, with the top five (5) scoring applicants (plus ties) advancing to the Chief’s interview. Lateral candidates who pass the physical agility test shall proceed to the oral interviews with the top five (5) applicants (plus ties) advancing to the Chief’s Interview.
From the ranking order of the candidates after the Chief’s Interview the candidates will be offered a position with the first candidate chosen from the Lateral list, the second candidate chosen from the Entry Level list and rotating back and forth until both eligibility lists are expired. Prior to appointment, the successful applicant must pass a post-offer medical examination and qualify for a Federal Aviation Administration/Transportation Security Administration Security Badge (comprehensive background check required).
The applicant is required to maintain physical conditioning and suitability throughout their career.
Initial salary will be at the entry level of $3,720.74 per month (plus COLA 07-01-2008), lateral initial salary level of $4,138.92 per month (plus COLA 07-01-08), plus an excellent benefits package.
